Simple Homemade Applesauce

Some of the best foods are really simple. I always say use the best ingredients and keep it simple and true. This is true with applesauce. I use only organic Granny Smith apples and organic sugar. You can also do a mixture of apples if you want to sweeten it up a bit. Just by substituting a few yellow delicious apples the sauce will be sweeter. I’m using this applesauce to top potato latkes so I want it to be sweet and tart. This is so simple – Peel the apples and cook with sugar – done! If you want it chunky, cook it less. How’s that for easy!

Peel, core and slice the apples. Place into a water bath so they don’t turn brown.

Drain liquid. Place the apples in a pan and add sugar and cook. If you aren’t using the apple sauce for latkes, then add some cinnimon for extra flavor.

Perfect! A really simple applesauce that’s a little chunky. Nice and tart too!!

Simple Applesauce

8 granny smith apples, peeled and cut into ¼ inch wedges

2/3 cup sugar

soak apples in water and lemon juice until your ready to start cooking them.

Remove apples from water and place in a non-stick sauté pan. Add sugar and cook on medium heat until almost all the apples break down. I do like to leave a little chunky apple in it. If it becomes too dry before the apples are cooked, add a small amount of water to keep it just moist. I do not add lemon or cinnamon in this applesauce because I don’t want anything to mask the flavor of the latkes. I want it to be really simple and I want to taste apples –nothing else.
